Jackson, of course, did both: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY involved both the character connections and the battle moments. For the new film, THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, he seems to have made the choice to concentrate on the film experts and go the activity film path --understandable, as he has no question determined (rightly, I think) that nothing will please the enthusiasts and he might as well neglect them; there's no factor of getting the irredeemably aggressive into consideration when determining how to existing his edition of Tolkien's tale.
